How does greenwashing legislation hold up?
Journalist John Lorinc shares details on Canada’s new anti-greenwashing legislation, Bill C-59, with Canada’s Chartered Professional Accountants.
Lorinc asked Wren Montgomery why she thinks the regulation is so important. Wren notes that there’s been a dangerous shift in greenwashing, to what the Greenwash Action Lab coins “futurewashing.”
Referring to corporations that greenwash, Wren notes that “what they were doing is moving the greenwashing out to the future, where it's much harder to prove and it's much harder to be called out.”
Wren explains that the second part of the new law calls that out specifically – “it's going after those net zero or carbon neutral claims, and saying it has to meet an international standard. I think [that’s] necessary, because that's really been a huge growth in greenwashing in net zero claims, and the vast majority are without evidence."
